Short take: The Glass Menagerie

delivered this this show, the point of which is: we are, all of us, alone in the dark, broken and unfixable. What they added was an interpretation of the Tom Wingfield character that I would not have expected, bringing humor and lightness, but not enough to lift everyone up and out. You can't really sit with a happy ending for a while, like you can with the ending of a show like this. It's affecting.

Runs through September 13 in Kenmore.

The White Snake by ReAct

Last week, I read Theatre of the Unimpressed by Jordan Tannahill. The book rages – artfully – against plays that never ask themselves the question, why does this need to be done in front of a live audience. It’s a happy coincidence, then that the first play I have seen since reading the book was The White Snake , produced by ReAct and now playing at 12th Avenue Arts. The show knows exactly why it needs to be done in front of a live audience. It’s because it goe s back to the roots of theater, people telling stories to one another, to the audience, to me. It’s a beautiful story, simply told. At the top, three actors begin narrating directly to the audience, spooling out playwright Mary Zimmerman’s version of the Chinese legend, dating in written form to the Ming Dynasty. Salem Witch Orgasms by Ghost Light (RIP) at Copious

The Salem Witch Orgasms gave me a feeling.  I felt like it was the early 90s and I was at the Re-Bar watching one of Dan Savage’s Greek Active Theatre shows.  There was lots of zany romping, a big, funny, fast-paced show, and it took place, pretty much in a bar.  SWO is the first show I’ve seen in the new Copious space (formerly known as the Ballard Underground) and it works really well.  It has an underground (I guess because it is) cabaret vibe that was perfect for this show.  I recommend both the venue and the show.
