Cloud Tectonics

In Cloud Tectonics, now playing at 12th Avenue Arts, produced by Sound Theatre Company and Earthseed, Celestina del Sol has come unstuck in time, to coin a phrase. Nevertheless, she and Anibal de la Luna fall for each other. You can tell by the names that though their paths cross, they will diverge again. It’s a love story, doomed (or is it?) by Celestina living outside of time, on a different scale than Anibal. But it is a love story – driven not by astronomy but by chemistry between the actors and poetry in the script. I can’t remember the last time I saw intimacy played so well on stage. It’s very much worth seeing this show.

If you've taken an acting class, you might have done an Uta Hagen exercise requiring you to perform a two-minute slice of life.  Just you, on stage, silently doing something you might do on an ordinary day.  Maybe you're ironing.  Maybe you're making a sandwich.  The point is for the audience to see you acting naturally.  It's not as easy as it sounds. Same Time Next Year

In the director’s notes in the program for Same Time Next Year , produced by Heart Repertory Theatre and now playing at the Sammamish Valley Grange Hall in Woodinville, Jane Ryan writes,    “I didn’t think I would want to direct it because it is about an extramarital affair and I’m happily married to my true love for 45 years. But many of my friends told me how much they love this play, and folks I would meet recounted their fond memories of seeing the play or the movie.” This is perfect. It’s the same attitude of the characters, George and Doris. They wouldn’t have said ahead of time (would they?) that they wanted to have an affair, but when it presented itself — there it was and it looked so good they couldn’t resist. They live with that tension through the ups and downs of their lives for 25 years and we get to see it play out in two hours on the stage.  BJ Smyth (George) and Erin Michele Gabbard (Doris) do a beautiful job with these characters and their relationship. ...

Merchant of Venice: The Musical

Key plot elements, if you don’t know the show: Antonio, a Venetian merchant, borrows money from Shylock, who is Jewish. The money is to help Antonio’s friend, Bassanio, to woo Portia, a sort of wealthy heiress. Meanwhile, Shylock’s daughter, Jessica, yearns to escape her father and her Jewish identity by marrying Lorenzo, a Christian. When Antonio is unable to pay back the money, Shylock believes he finally has the chance to have the power of the law on his side. It’s an illusion. Shylock loses everything.  My first thought, halfway through Act One was, I want to go out to the lobby at intermission and buy the soundtrack. The music grabbed me from the very first number and never let me go.  This is not Phantom or Rent, though, where you can just do that. It’s a brand new show, and I saw its first public performance.
